On the Road is a non-profit organisation that since 1990 has been tackling prostitution and human trafficking for the purpose of sexual exploitation, particularly focusing street prostitution of migrant women and minors, which are often victims of trafficking networks organised and managed by criminal organisations.
On the Road intervenes in cases of discomfort and/or cases of risk stemming from prostitution; it therefore addresses both Italian prostitutes (including drug addicts) and Italian/foreign transvestites and transgender persons’ related issues.
The association has also widened its fields of action to other and new social issues, such as forms of trafficking other than for sexual exploitation, marginalization and poverty. On the Road develops structured activities and services directly addressing people affected by such forms of exclusion, with an approach based on the promotion and protection of individuals’ rights. Since its foundation, the Association has taken part to several EU funded projects, mostly under Now, Equal, Daphne, ESF and ISEC programmes.
In addition, On the Road contributes to the promotion of new policies,at local, national and trans-national level, as well as the elaboration of models of intervention, of professional profiles and of training curricula; it carries out research-action projects and publishes several technical publications.
Since July 2010 the Association runs the Help Center at Pescara Centrale Railway Station. This center provides homeless and marginalised people moving in the station area with social orientation, night shelters, psychological and legal counselling, creative workshops and other services.
