Ferrovie dello Stato Italiane S.p.A. is the Holding and parent company of a group of companies, each of which focuses on a particular sector of activity, the most important being Rete Ferroviaria Italiana, Trenitalia, Grandi Stazioni, and Centostazioni.
Ferrovie dello Stato Italiane serves the 301,338 km² Italian territory with a network of 16,500 km of rails, with more than 2,400 stations.
For Ferrovie dello Stato Italiane social responsibility means investing in human capital, knowledge, the environment and relations with other economic and social actors, to conjugate solidarity with safety and security. The fundamental principles on which the F.S. Group bases its actions are an integral part of the Code of Ethics that has been followed by the company for many years.
The Holding established a Social Policies and Relations with Associations department in 2001, to search for common solutions to the problems of social distress and homelessness, that are often found in and around railway stations, in collaboration with the public administration, charity organisations and associations. The main mechanism set up with this aim is the ONDS, the network of Help Centers located in railway stations in spaces Ferrovie dello Stato Italiane provides for free.
The Social Policies department is one of the co-founders, along with SNCF, SNCB, CFL and PKP of the European Charter for the development of social initiatives in stations, the network of 12 Railway Companies sharing methods and best practices to tackle homelessness.
